Club History

Flinders University Muay Thai club, also known as Flinders University Shao Lin club, was formed in 1980 by Alan Wong who was an undergraduate student of Flinders at the time.

At that time Muay Thai was a relatively unknown art in Australia. The club was formed to teach Shao Lin Kung Fu but with declining club members over a number of years, the founding members of the club decided to take some action in order to save the club from closing down. Since Alan had been exposed to Muay Thai as a youngster and Kickboxing was becoming popular in Australia, a decision was taken to start teaching Muay Thai. This we thought would attract more members and little did we know, Muay Thai was so popular that Shao Lin Kung Fu is no longer taught at the club and hence the name change.
